Long Nard
Both players start from opposite corners and race the same way round the board. There is no hitting: a single checker already holds a point, so the game is about building blocks of six that your opponent cannot pass.
Long Nard and Tavla with the real rules, a wooden board and dice you can feel. Play smart bots offline, pass the phone to a friend, or sit at an online table. Free for iPhone and Android.
Long Nard from the Caucasus and Central Asia, and Tavla, classic or with the doubling cube.
Both players start from opposite corners and race the same way round the board. There is no hitting: a single checker already holds a point, so the game is about building blocks of six that your opponent cannot pass.
Short backgammon: checkers move in opposite directions, a lone checker can be hit and sent to the bar, and it must come back in before anything else moves. Play it classic, or modern with the doubling cube.
Easy, Medium and Hard. The hard bot looks ahead, builds primes and plays for mars, and it works with no connection at all.
Two players on one phone or tablet, the way the game is played across a table at home.
Quick Match seats you with a real opponent in seconds; a private room with an invite code is for your friends.

Nard Online is a free backgammon game for iPhone and Android with the two versions people actually play at home. Long Nard (nardy, uzun nərd, uzun tavla) is the game of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus, Iran and Central Asia: both players move the same way round the board, nobody is ever hit, and a single checker blocks a point. Tavla is the short game known across Turkey and the Mediterranean as backgammon: checkers are hit and sent to the bar, gammons (mars) count double, and the modern version adds the doubling cube.
Play offline against bots at Easy, Medium or Hard, pass one phone between two players, or go online: Quick Match finds an opponent in seconds, and a private room with an invite code is for friends. A fair turn clock with a time bank keeps games moving, dice are rolled on the server, and if your connection drops you reconnect to the same board. Climb the weekly, monthly and all-time ladders, unlock 51 achievements, and dress your table in maple, walnut, oak, marble or Shusha inlay.

Each player has 15 checkers stacked on one point, the head, in opposite corners of the board. Both players move counter-clockwise, round the board towards their own home.
Roll two dice and move one checker by each number, or one checker by both. Doubles are played four times. Only one checker may leave the head per turn; the one exception is a first-turn 6-6, 4-4 or 3-3, when the opponent's checkers would otherwise block the roll.
There is no hitting: a point with even one checker on it is closed to your opponent. Build blocks of points in a row, but never a wall of six that traps all fifteen opposing checkers.
Once all fifteen of your checkers are in your home quarter, bear them off with your rolls. The first to clear the board wins, and wins a mars, worth two, if the opponent has not borne off a single checker.
